Speck is a “designer breed” back when they were called mixed breeds. She has different colored eyes and a speck of blue in her brown eye. She loves to come to the shop for a visit and such a trooper for her grooming. But, this old girl is just as happy to go home for a well deserved rest.

So I have to ask; are ‘mixed breed’ and ‘designer breed’ euphemisms for ‘mutt’?

Yes. Pet Industry workers find it amusing that “breeders” have coined a new marketing term of “designer breeds”. There is even a registry for names. Like a dachshund shih tzu mix is a Schweenie. Puppy mills are having a hay day. This way they can charge more. The shelters are full of Jack-a-poos, Meagles, and Chorkis. All for the low, low price of a spay or nueter and licensing.
